Do you lead a lifestyle that promotes healthy skin?
The everyday things your skin needs outside of your routine
Although many may have you believe otherwise, everyone’s skin has the same three layers. The outermost layer is the epidermis, and it contains keratinocytes or keratin. This is a tough protein found in hair and nails. Keratin forms other layers that grow outward as your exterior cells die and flake off, i.e. dead skin cells. The dermis is beneath the epidermis and contains collagen, elastin, hair follicles, and sweat glands. Beneath the dermis is the hypodermis. It contains fat and more connective tissue. Your skin is the largest organ of the body and protects your internal organs against the sheer ghetto-ness of this world. It is that simple.
That said, you must know that skincare is not an exact science. Your skin’s needs differ depending on your skin type. The climate you live in may determine what skincare products go into your routine. So, choosing your day and nighttime skincare routine will not be as easy as you want it to be. Unless you have normal, perfect skin, of course.
Do not be discouraged, though! Despite the different skin types, there are essential, common things that each needs. Today, we will unpack that. Keep reading to learn:
4 essential things that all skin types need daily
1. Hydration or moisture
Unless you wear makeup, have oily skin, or spend a lot of time in a pore-clogging environment, you do not need to wash your face every day. I have a friend of 15 years who washed her face with water every day and has not had so much as a pimple to show for the madness. Although she may get away with not cleansing her skin daily, she cannot get away with not hydrating it. Every skin type needs hydration or moisture! Whether you drink the required amount of water every day, or you apply an oil-free moisturizer, your skin still needs that hydration. So don’t skim on it!
2. Ventilation
Did you read "ventilation" and think, huh?! Since COVID-19 began, it has been difficult for your skin to breathe, right? Think about it. You wear a mask that not only restricts your breathing but blocks the fresh air that so many people took for granted. For many people, maskne has been a real, nightmare of a thing, too.
There are many reasons your skin needs to breathe, and excretion of natural oils and sweat are two of those reasons. With a well-balanced PH and a healthy immune system, your sebaceous glands should secrete enough oils to keep your skin hydrated. That is not to suggest that you skip out on moisturizers, but it is a matter of fact. Sweat is your body’s way of ridding itself of toxins brought on by free radicals and other gook produced by a working body. When you suppress either of these things, they manifest in skin issues that you hate, such as acne, inflammation, etc. That said, skip out on makeup some days, sweetheart. I know that can be rough for some, but your skin will thank you.
3. Rest or sleep
I cannot stress this enough - you will not sleep when you are dead! You will sleep enough every day so that you can increase your longevity. Amen. When you sleep, your body is happy. Why? It can do the things that you inhibit in your awake state. For your skin, sleep is when it gets to shed dead skin cells, grow new ones, and absorb the skincare products you apply during your nighttime skincare routine. Those unsightly dark under-eye circles that you have? Sleep deprivation. Although dark circles are hereditary for some, others get them when they do not rest enough. Puffy eyes, fine lines and wrinkles, and under-eye dark circles are the result of inflammation (puffy eyes) and poor blood circulation. Sleep deprivation promotes both of these things. If you want to look bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, the best thing to do is get at least 7-8 hours of sleep every night. Again, your body will thank you for it.
4. A consistent day and nighttime skincare routine
Even if you are not a skincare enthusiast, you can still follow a skincare routine that works for you! The deeper you go down the skincare rabbit hole, the more you realize that there are products that work best during the day versus the night. Learn those products and apply them as needed. As with anything good in life, consistency is the best method. So, find a skincare routine that works for your skin type, then give it some time to work its magic.
